On August 31, 2023, the Government issued an official announcement declaring the termination of the "COVID visa" for new applicants from 2 September 2023.
Starting from this date and until 1 February 2024, only applicants who currently hold a "COVID visa" may be eligible to apply for a new one.
Furthermore, a visa lodgement fee of $405 for primary applicants will apply, along with a visa charge for any secondary applicants.
Lastly, as of February 1, 2024, this visa stream will be closed to all applicants.

Initially introduced by the Australian Government in April 2020 during the COVID-19 Pandemic, the "COVID visa" served as an alternative for individuals who found themselves unable to return to their home countries due to border closures. It was later expanded to include applicants in other circumstances as a response to the shortage of skilled workers in Australia.
