407 Visa Changes: New Requirements

Previously, many applicants could lodge the Sponsorship, Nomination, and Visa applications all at the same time (concurrently).

As of 11 March 2026, this is no longer possible. You must now follow a strict, sequential process. You cannot apply for the visa until the first two stages are fully approved.

The New 3-Step Process

To lodge a valid Subclass 407 visa application now, the following must happen in this specific order:

  1. Approved Sponsor: The business must already be an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor.

  2. Approved Nomination: The sponsor must have already submitted the nomination for the specific applicant and received an approval from the Department of Home Affairs.

  3. Visa Application: Only once the nomination is approved can the applicant then lodge their visa application.

Note: These requirements do not apply if the sponsor is a Commonwealth (Federal) Government agency.

Who does this affect?

  • New Applicants: If you are lodging an application on or after 11 March 2026, you must follow the new rules.

  • Existing Applicants: If your application was lodged before 11 March 2026, these changes do not apply to you; your application will be processed under the old rules.

What does this mean for your timeline?

Because the Sponsorship and the Nomination must now be approved before the Visa can be lodged, the total time from starting the process to being able to apply for the visa will be longer. With current official processing times ranging from 88 days to 11 months (currently about 10 months on average), it is more important than ever to plan your training visa pathway well in advance.
